Title: Zamfara Govt Clarifies Alleged Shari’ah Court Case, Draws Praise from Northern CAN Date Published: 22 May 2025 Description: The Zamfara State Government has issued a prompt clarification denying reports that a young woman, Zainab Muhamadu, was arraigned before a Shari’ah Court over claims of converting to Christianity. The government emphasized that no such case is ongoing and no crime has been committed regarding her right to religious freedom. In its public statement, the government categorically debunked reports of any legal proceedings against Zainab, reassuring citizens that the situation had been misrepresented. Statements from the Grand Khadi, as well as input from the Director-General of Hisbah and other security agencies, were instrumental in clarifying the issue and de-escalating tension that could have flared into a wider crisis. In response, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) commended the Zamfara State Government for its swift and transparent handling of the matter.Northern CAN Chairman, Reverend Joseph Hayab, and Secretary General, Bishop Muhammed Naga, in a statement released Thursday, praised the government’s proactive approach in addressing the sensitive issue and confirming that no Shari’ah Court case exists. They further acknowledged the constructive roles played by the Department of State Services (DSS), traditional leaders, youth representatives, religious figures, and security officials in promoting peace and understanding.“While we welcome this clarification, we emphasize that should any credible information surface in the future, it must be treated with the same urgency, transparency, and accountability,” the CAN leaders stated. They urged Christians nationwide to take note that, based on current verified information, there is no ongoing case against Zainab and that her right to practice her religion freely has not been violated. The statement also called for greater collaboration between Northern state governments and religious bodies like CAN to prevent the spread of unverified reports and foster mutual trust.“To Christians in the North and across Nigeria, we assure you that CAN remains resolute in uncovering the truth and combating any form of religious persecution,” the statement affirmed.Reaffirming their commitment to national unity and peaceful coexistence, the leaders concluded: “We urge Christians to remain calm, law-abiding, and prayerful. CAN will continue to stand for peace, justice, and the protection of the fundamental rights of all Nigerians.” Attached Images: 3b7019d3b03f158f525b9541b30ac32d56afeb7cf0a9359d05a6d40738a02050.jpg Attached Video: None
