Title: ABSG DISMISSES MISINFORMATION ON UMUNNEOCHI SECURITY INCIDENT Date Published: 18 June 2025 Description: ...warns purveyors of fake news, reaffirms commitment to peace and safetyThe Abia State Government has strongly condemned what it described as an “orchestrated campaign of misinformation” surrounding the recent security breach in the Umunneochi area, warning that it will not tolerate attempts to incite panic or discredit the state’s security efforts. In a press release signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, and dated May 18, 2025, the government faulted what it called “journalistic recklessness” by individuals using obscure blogs and unregulated YouTube platforms to spread false claims about the incident and the government’s response.“There were no casualty figures mentioned during the briefing, as none had been confirmed by security agencies at the time. Additionally, the breach was not attributed to Fulani herdsmen or any particular group, since investigations are still ongoing,” the statement clarified. The government reiterated that Governor Alex C. Otti, OFR, had immediately convened an emergency meeting of the State Security Council to address the Umunneochi situation, underscoring the administration’s proactive approach to security matters.Citing the relative peace enjoyed in the state since May 2023, the Information Commissioner highlighted the impact of “Operation Crush,” a special security outfit set up by the Otti-led government to tackle crime in collaboration with other security agencies.“The attempt to misinform the public and undermine our security achievements is not only unfortunate, it is destined to fail,” the government asserted. It further warned that those found to be behind the spread of fake news would be prosecuted, stressing that it would not allow media terrorism to masquerade as free speech.Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives and property, the government urged residents and investors to remain calm and continue their lawful activities without fear.
