Title: INEC Receives 122 Applications for New Political Parties Date Published: 04 July 2025 Description: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued supplementary regulations to clarify the procedure for reviewing election results under Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022. This was announced following its regular weekly meeting held on Thursday, July 3, 2025.According to a press statement signed by Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, the new guidelines are aimed at eliminating ambiguity surrounding the Commission’s power to review declarations or returns made under questionable circumstances.“The supplementary regulations and guidelines have now been approved and uploaded to the Commission\'s website and other platforms for public information,” the statement said.In a separate update, INEC revealed that it has received 122 applications from various associations seeking registration as political parties. This includes 12 new applications submitted as of July 2, 2025, in addition to the 110 earlier announced on June 23.The Commission emphasized that the application review process will be carried out with transparency and fairness, in accordance with the Electoral Act and the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties. However, INEC noted that one association had already altered its interim leadership due to a defection, warning that such inconsistencies could delay the application process. It appealed to aspiring political groups to maintain consistency in their proposed leadership and official addresses.INEC reaffirmed its commitment to keeping the public updated on further developments in both the registration process and election-related reforms.
