Title: NLC Warns: Electoral Act Confusion Threatens Democracy Date Published: 08 February 2026 Description: LThe Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has raised alarm over what it described as confusion surrounding the Senate’s amendment of the 2022 Electoral Act, warning that ambiguity on electronic transmission of election results could undermine electoral credibility and Nigeria’s democratic process. In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, said conflicting explanations from the Senate had eroded public trust and heightened nationwide apprehension.Ajaero stressed that Nigerians deserved a transparent electoral system in which votes were not only counted but clearly seen to be counted, noting that any lack of clarity on electronic transmission of results posed a serious threat to democratic integrity. He called on the Senate to urgently clarify the exact provisions passed and the reasons behind its decisions, adding that public records suggested the proposal to mandate real-time electronic transmission of results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was not adopted, with discretionary powers retained instead.According to him, the absence of clear and enforceable provisions risked institutionalising doubt in the electoral system, particularly in light of controversies that followed the 2023 general elections. The NLC president urged the leadership of the National Assembly to ensure that the final harmonised bill clearly compels INEC to electronically transmit and collate results in real time, warning that any ambiguity would be a disservice to Nigeria’s democracy.Ajaero said preparations for the 2027 general elections must be anchored on transparency and certainty, not confusion, adding that Nigerian workers and citizens would continue to demand electoral integrity, accountability and people-focused legislation.
