Suspected sea pirates have abducted five passengers traveling on a commercial boat along the Degema–Akuku-Toru waterways in Rivers State, sparking renewed concerns over security on the state’s creeks and riverine routes.
The attack occurred while the boat was en route from Bille in Degema Local Government Area to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. Sources revealed that the criminals intercepted the vessel near the Cawthorne Channel in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area and forcefully whisked away five of the six occupants onboard.
A fortunate twist spared the sixth passenger — an elderly woman reportedly battling a health condition. She was said to be on her way to Port Harcourt for urgent medical care when the pirates decided to let her go.
Confirming the incident, the Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene, stated in a release that the assailants allowed the woman to continue her journey due to her medical condition.
“The boat that was attacked by the pirates and people taken hostage was sailing from Bille to Port Harcourt. Six people were on board but five were taken hostage,” Dr. Dumnamene said. “The sixth person, an elderly woman, is reported to have been sick and was heading to Port Harcourt for medical attention.”
As of the time of this report, the whereabouts of the kidnapped victims remain unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility. Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement.
