Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has approved the federal government\'s request to allow its witnesses testify behind closed doors in the terrorism case filed against Biafra agitator, Nnamdi Kanu.
The decision was delivered on Tuesday following an ex-parte application moved by Chief Adegboyega Solomon SAN, counsel to the federal government. In his argument, Solomon told the court that concealing the identities of the witnesses was necessary due to security concerns, considering the sensitive nature of the charges against Kanu.
\"The charges bother on terrorism, and the safety of the witnesses must be protected,\" he submitted. He further requested that the names and faces of the witnesses be kept from public view to prevent any security breach.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi SAN, did not oppose the application, leading Justice Omotosho to grant the request. However, Agabi urged the court to expect the same level of cooperation from the federal government when bail proceedings for Kanu are to be heard.
As of the time of filing this report, the federal government has opened its case, with its first protected witness, codenamed PWAAA, currently testifying in court.
