The Bayelsa State Government has launched an official investigation into the killing of Mr. Daniel Ayama, who was murdered by unknown assailants on May 16 in Yenagoa. Governor Douye Diri directed the State Special Committee on Security and Human Rights Violations to probe the circumstances surrounding the 27-year-old\'s death and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The directive was issued on Monday during a high-level meeting at Government House, Yenagoa, attended by Commissioner of Police Francis Idu, members of the bereaved Ayama family, and other key stakeholders. Represented by Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Governor Diri condemned the killing and recent cult-related violence in the state, warning that such acts may be politically motivated attempts to destabilize Bayelsa.
Due to his personal ties to the deceased\'s community, Senator Ewhrudjakpo recused himself from the committee\'s deliberations to ensure an impartial investigation. He tasked the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Dambo Biriyai, SAN, to take the lead in ensuring a transparent and just process.
The committee includes representatives from the Nigeria Police, the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Bar Association (Yenagoa branch), and the Governor’s Special Advisers on Security, among others. It has been given three weeks to submit its findings.
Governor Diri appealed for public cooperation, urging anyone with evidence to assist the committee in its work. He also called on the family and supporters to halt planned protests, stressing that justice is best served through due process, not public unrest.
Commissioner of Police Francis Idu confirmed that a suspect has been arrested and is providing valuable information that may aid the investigation. Meanwhile, a family representative, Mr. Ebikabowei Ayama, thanked the state government for its swift response and called for a fair and unbiased investigation.
The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding human rights and ensuring justice for all residents of Bayelsa State.
