The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has commended governors of Nigeria’s South-South region for what it described as “commendable leadership and governance strides” as the nation marked Democracy Day on May 29th.
In a press statement signed by Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali (OON), National Chairman of PANDEF, the influential regional body praised the governors for major achievements in infrastructure, social welfare, and economic development.
PANDEF singled out Governor Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Governor Bassey Otu (Cross River), Governor Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), and Governor Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers) for their ongoing commitment to transformative projects such as major road networks, bridge expansions, urban renewal, agriculture, and port development.
Also commended were Governor Douye Diri (Bayelsa) and Governor Monday Okpebholo (Edo) for their developmental efforts in recent months.
“Combined, these efforts are significantly enhancing connectivity between our people, fostering regional integration, and laying a solid foundation for sustained economic growth,” the statement read.
PANDEF noted improvements in healthcare, education, and the welfare of civil servants as indicators of progress across the region. It expressed optimism that if the current trajectory is maintained, the South-South could soon serve as a national model for development.
However, the forum warned against complacency, encouraging governors to stay the course and deepen cooperation through platforms such as the BRACED Commission to build a stronger regional economic corridor.
In a broader appeal, PANDEF called on the people of the region—especially traditional rulers, elders, youth, and community leaders—to continue offering support, prayers, and cooperation toward the region’s stability and progress.
Addressing ongoing political instability, PANDEF expressed concern over the crisis in Rivers State, describing it as a threat to democratic ideals.
“While acknowledging the various challenges that persist, including the unfortunate ongoing political crisis and democratic erosion in Rivers State, PANDEF reaffirms its unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and progress in the entire Niger Delta,” the statement added.
The group expressed hope that peace would soon return to Rivers and reaffirmed its dedication to mobilizing the region’s people toward unity and development.
Ambassador Igali concluded by congratulating the region’s leaders and citizens on the Democracy Day celebration, calling it a moment to renew commitment to good governance and inclusive growth.
