Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has come under intense scrutiny following his announcement that the Eleme-Onne section of the East-West Road in Rivers State is nearly completed and ready for commissioning.

Umahi’s statement sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians taking to social media and other platforms to dispute the claim. One of the most notable rebuttals came from investigative journalist and broadcaster, Mr. Ndume Green of Capital TV, who conducted a live on-site report exposing the true condition of the road.

In the live video, Mr. Green provided visual evidence showing large portions of the road still under construction, directly contradicting the minister’s announcement. Of particular concern were the Akpajo and Onne flyovers, both of which remain incomplete. The footage revealed ongoing earthworks, unpaved segments, and construction materials still on-site—casting doubt on the project’s readiness for any formal unveiling.

Local residents and road users have also voiced their frustration, noting that despite years of promises, the East-West Road—an economic artery linking the oil-rich Niger Delta to the rest of the country—remains plagued by delays and poor maintenance.

The Ministry of Works has yet to issue a response to the criticism or the viral video as of the time of this report.

Gist Reports will continue to monitor developments on the East-West Road project and provide timely updates.
