Inter Milan, Monterrey Advance to Club World Cup Last 16
Inter Milan sealed their place in the Club World Cup last 16 with a composed 2-0 victory over a nine-man River Plate on Wednesday. Mexican side Monterrey also advanced from Group E, joining the Italians in the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund claimed top spot in Group F after edging Ulsan HD 1-0. The German club is now set to face Monterrey—led by veteran defender Sergio Ramos—following their dominant 4-0 win over Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds.
River Plate’s hopes were dashed after falling to Inter, who now gear up for a South American showdown against Brazil’s Fluminense on Monday in Charlotte. Fluminense secured second place in their group with a goalless draw against South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.
Match Highlights: Inter Milan vs River Plate
Played in front of 45,000 fans at Seattle’s Lumen Field, the clash saw River Plate go down to nine men. Lucas Martinez was shown red for a rough challenge on Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 66th minute, and Gonzalo Montiel followed shortly after with a second yellow card.
Inter’s Francesco Esposito scored his debut goal for the club to break the deadlock, while Alessandro Bastoni added a late second to secure the win.
“We were caught off guard by their aggression early on,” Inter manager Christian Chivu admitted. “But we raised our intensity in the second half. This team is strong, confident, and built for moments like these.”
River Plate’s elimination marks a disappointing exit for both Argentine representatives, as rivals Boca Juniors were also knocked out earlier.
“It’s heartbreaking for our fans,” said River coach Marcelo Gallardo. “They came in numbers, and we couldn’t deliver.”
Tensions flared at full-time with objects thrown onto the pitch by frustrated River fans.
Monterrey Crush Urawa to Advance
At the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Monterrey delivered a masterclass in finishing with three first-half goals in just nine minutes.
Nelson Deossa opened the scoring with a thunderous long-range strike. German Berterame added the second before former Porto winger Jesús Corona rifled home a third from over 30 yards. Berterame later scored his second of the night to complete the rout.
“We gave everything in this group. Every match was a battle,” Berterame said after the win.
Monterrey now face Dortmund in Atlanta on Tuesday.
