The Super Eagles of Nigeria have reportedly refused to travel to Marrakech for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash against Algeria over unpaid match bonuses.
The development was disclosed on Friday by BBC Africa journalist, Oluwashina Okeleji, via a post on X, noting that the players and coaching crew had halted all travel plans in protest.
Nigeria, one of the most impressive sides at the ongoing AFCON tournament in Morocco, is scheduled to face Algeria on Saturday evening in a highly anticipated quarter-final encounter.
The Super Eagles have enjoyed a flawless run so far, winning all four of their matches and emerging as the tournament’s highest goal scorers. Under the guidance of head coach Eric Chelle, the team recorded victories over Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda in the group stage, before hammering Mozambique 4–0 in the Round of 16.
However, it was gathered that bonuses for the four matches already played at the tournament are yet to be paid, prompting the players and technical crew to suspend training and refuse to proceed to the match venue.
Sources close to the team said the protest is aimed at forcing the authorities to resolve the outstanding financial issues before the crucial knockout fixture.
This is the second time in three months that the Super Eagles have embarked on a bonus-related protest. In November 2025, the team similarly downed tools during the international break ahead of a key World Cup playoff against Gabon. That dispute, however, was resolved within 24 hours, allowing the match to go ahead.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official reaction from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) regarding the latest development.
