The Federal Government has unveiled plans to establish fire stations in all 109 senatorial districts across Nigeria as part of a nationwide effort to strengthen emergency response and reduce fire disasters.
Dr. Olumode Samuel-Adeyemi, Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), announced the plan during a visit to Singer Market in Kano State on Tuesday, following a major fire that struck the market on February 14.
According to Samuel-Adeyemi, the initiative aims to safeguard lives, protect national assets, and enhance public safety. A dedicated fire post will also be established at Singer Market to curb recurring fire outbreaks and ensure faster emergency response.
Conveying the message of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Samuel-Adeyemi expressed condolences to Kano State residents and market traders for the loss of lives and property, estimated in billions of naira. “Two similar incidents occurred in the market within weeks, causing significant economic losses. Establishing a fire station in the market will help reduce response time and prevent future disasters,” he said.
The FFS chief appealed to Nigerians to give way to fire trucks, noting that although firefighters arrived at Singer Market within 20 minutes, access was delayed due to obstruction. He identified major fire risks, including faulty electrical wiring, unsafe fuel storage, use of generators, lithium battery installations, and unattended appliances.
Samuel-Adeyemi further highlighted that the FFS has intensified public education and market inspections through its Inspectorate and Enforcement Unit, while the proposed amendment to the Fire Service Act would grant stronger enforcement powers, including the authority to seal premises lacking mandatory fire safety equipment.
He added that plans to construct water reservoirs in major markets and collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps would further enhance firefighting efficiency and crowd management during emergencies.
The Controller General commended Kano State Fire Service and other emergency agencies for their cooperation and assured that the federal government would continue supporting them with training and equipment.
