The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over what it described as “amputated” salaries paid to its members for January and February 2026.
The decision was announced in a communiqué issued after an emergency congress of the union on Tuesday and signed by the chapter chairperson, Dr. Idou Kehinde, and the secretary, Dr. Adesina Arikawe.
According to the union, the strike will commence on Wednesday, March 11, and will continue until the university management pays the affected salaries in full.
ASUU accused the university administration of unilaterally reducing the salaries of academic staff in the two months under review, describing the action as discriminatory and unacceptable.
The union explained that while lecturers at the Akoka campus were not paid their Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) in January, those at the Idi-Araba campus were denied both the EAA and the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA).
It further alleged that the February 2026 salaries paid to its members were also slashed, a move the union condemned as “wicked, unfeeling and satanic.”
ASUU said the development prompted extensive deliberations by its members, who unanimously resolved to reject the deductions and withdraw their services until the issue is resolved.
The communiqué stated that the decision aligns with an earlier National Executive Council resolution adopted on May 8, 2025, which empowers branches to take action in cases of salary infractions.
“Congress unanimously resolves to reject entirely the recent action that resulted in members receiving amputated January and February 2026 salaries,” the statement said.
The union added that the strike would remain in force until the university management pays all outstanding salary components in full.
The industrial action comes months after the Federal Government and ASUU reached a renegotiated agreement in late 2025 aimed at ending recurring disputes and strikes in public universities.
The agreement, which took effect from January 1, 2026, included a 40 percent upward review of academic staff salaries under the Consolidated University Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONUASS).
It also introduced the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) while retaining and revising the Earned Academic Allowance to cover duties such as postgraduate supervision, excess workload and examination-related tasks.
However, the implementation of the agreement has reportedly faced challenges in some universities, with delays and inconsistencies in the payment of the new allowances.
