Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing persistent internal crises within his former party.
Tambuwal announced his decision in a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in the early hours of Thursday. He said he had already communicated his resignation in writing to his ward chairman before formally aligning with the ADC alongside his political associates and supporters.
According to the former governor, the PDP’s lingering leadership disagreements and deepening divisions had made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the party. He noted that the prolonged internal crisis had weakened the unity and direction that once defined the PDP.
Tambuwal, however, acknowledged the role the PDP played in shaping his political journey, which included his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives and two terms as Governor of Sokoto State. Despite this, he said the current situation within the party made his continued membership untenable.
Explaining his choice of a new political platform, Tambuwal said he believes the ADC offers a stronger vehicle for democratic progress and national development. He added that his decision was guided by a commitment to integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and the advancement of Nigeria’s democratic ideals.
His defection comes amid a series of high-profile political realignments, including the move by former presidential candidate Peter Obi to the ADC, a development that analysts say could strengthen the party’s position as an opposition platform ahead of future elections.
