A Nigerian political scientist and international business executive, Mr. Kio Amachree, has formally petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, demanding the immediate removal and investigation of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, over allegations of political destabilisation, abuse of office and threats to peace in Rivers State.
In a detailed petition dated February 8, 2026, and addressed to the President through the Chief of Staff, and circulated online, Amachree accused the Federal Government of adopting a “dangerous and provocative posture” in Rivers State, warning that continued political interference could undermine stability in the Niger Delta region. Copies of the petition were also sent to the Attorney-General of the Federation, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the chairmen of the EFCC and ICPC, as well as the leadership of the National Assembly.
Amachree described himself as a non-partisan Nigerian citizen with no political ambition, stating that his intervention was motivated solely by concern for constitutional order, peace and justice in Rivers State. He argued that Rivers, as a major oil-producing state, should not be treated as a security threat or militarised zone, insisting that federal security attention should instead be focused on terrorism and banditry in other parts of the country.
In the petition, Amachree called for the immediate removal of Wike from federal office pending investigation, alleging that the minister’s continued presence in government constitutes a destabilising influence in Rivers State. He further demanded comprehensive investigations by the EFCC and ICPC into alleged corruption, diversion of public funds, unexplained wealth and abuse of office, including a full audit of the minister’s assets, luxury vehicles and properties at home and abroad.
The petitioner also urged security agencies to investigate a widely circulated audio recording, which he claimed allegedly contains threats of violence attributed to Wike. He questioned why, despite the circulation of the recording on social media platforms, there had been no public arrest or interrogation, warning that selective justice could erode public confidence in the rule of law.
Beyond the political allegations, Amachree raised a separate demand for justice over the killing of his cousin, Miss Ibyami Amachree, allegedly by a soldier. He called for the identification of the soldier involved, disclosure of the unit and chain of command, and prosecution where evidence supports it, arguing that impunity within the security services fuels future instability.
Amachree anchored his intervention partly on family history, recalling the role of his late father, Chief Godfrey Kio Jaja Amachree, QC, in Nigeria’s legal, diplomatic and political development, including the creation of Rivers State. He also referenced his grandfather, Chief Sekin Amachree, as a Niger Delta freedom fighter, stressing what he described as his family’s long-standing commitment to the region and the Nigerian state.
The petitioner warned that failure to address the issues raised could lead to international escalation, noting that he would pursue lawful international advocacy if the matter was ignored. He cautioned that Nigeria’s international reputation could suffer if another Niger Delta crisis were allowed to emerge through what he described as political manipulation and tolerance of corruption.
In a summary of demands, Amachree called for Wike’s removal and investigation, an end to federal interference in Rivers State, a review of security deployments in the state, renewed focus on combating terrorism and banditry elsewhere, justice for alleged victims of security abuses, and the establishment of a Niger Delta stability framework anchored on development and respect for local communities.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency and the minister named in the petition had not issued any official response.
