The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained the rationale behind fixing the 2027 general elections during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, saying the dates were determined strictly in line with existing laws and regulations, while assuring Nigerians that it may seek legislative intervention if adjustments become necessary.
INEC’s position was contained in a statement issued on Friday by its National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
According to the commission, the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 general elections were prepared in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections issued in 2022.
The statement explained that INEC’s guidelines, in force since 2019, clearly stipulate that presidential, vice-presidential and National Assembly elections must hold on the third Saturday of February in any general election year, while governorship and State House of Assembly elections are to be conducted two weeks later.
Based on these provisions, the commission fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly polls.
However, INEC acknowledged widespread public concerns that the dates coincide with Ramadan, a period of fasting and religious devotion for Muslims across the country.
The commission said it is mindful of such sensitivities and remains open to possible adjustments.
“Notwithstanding the foregoing, the commission has taken due notice of concerns expressed by stakeholders regarding the coincidence of the scheduled dates with certain nationally recognised holidays and observances,” the statement read.
INEC assured Nigerians that it is currently consulting with relevant stakeholders and may, if necessary, seek appropriate legislative intervention to address the concerns, provided any changes remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, inclusiveness and the credible conduct of the 2027 general elections, pledging to keep the public informed of any developments.
INEC also recalled that party primaries for the nomination of candidates have been scheduled to hold between May 22 and June 20, 2026.
Meanwhile, prominent political figures, including former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, have urged INEC to reconsider the February 20, 2027 election date, warning that holding the polls during Ramadan could adversely affect voter participation, particularly among Muslims.
