…Gives 30-day grace period for compliance nationwide
In a decisive move to tackle insecurity and streamline vehicle regulation, the Nigeria Police Force has reactivated the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) through a secure digital platform — www.possap.gov.ng.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, April 30, 2025, by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, followed a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM.
According to the statement, the reactivation of the permit system is in response to persistent public complaints about police harassment over the use of tinted windows. It also reflects the growing need for a transparent and standardized procedure to regularize factory-fitted tinted glasses, now common in modern vehicles.
The police boss noted that while tinted windows are increasingly a factory default in many vehicles, their misuse has also posed significant security threats. Criminals often exploit them for concealment during operations such as kidnapping, robbery, and “one-chance” scams.
The digital system will now allow applicants to process their permits online with full integration of biometric capture, identity verification using NIN and TIN, and background checks. Permits issued under this platform will be QR-coded and processed within 72 hours.
A 30-day grace period, effective May 1, 2025, has been approved to allow motorists regularize their status. Enforcement will begin once the grace window lapses. The IGP also warned that any officer found harassing or extorting motorists under the guise of enforcement will face strict disciplinary action.
Egbetokun emphasized that the move aligns with the Police Force’s commitment to technologically driven, citizen-focused policing, adding that it is designed to build public trust and enhance safety on Nigerian roads.
Motorists and stakeholders have been urged to cooperate with the new directive and take advantage of the simplified process now available online.
