The Nigerian Senate has urgently mandated an 18-member committee to commence oversight duties on Rivers State’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), citing national interest and the need to uphold democratic principles. Senate President Godswill Akpabio issued the directive during Tuesday’s plenary, stressing the legislature’s resolve to enforce checks and balances in the state’s governance.
The committee, unveiled after the Senate’s recess, was announced by Akpabio as part of efforts to ensure “effective and responsible governance” through legislative scrutiny. Chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, the panel includes Senators Adamu Aliero, Osita Izunaso, Osita Ngwu, Kaka Shehu, Aminu Abass, Tokunbo Abiru, Adeniyi Adebire, Sani Musa, Simon Lalong, Asuquo Ekpeyong, Adams Oshiomhole, Ireti Kingibe, Onyekachi, Idiat Adebule, Ide Dafinone, and Mohammed, with the Senate Clerk as secretary.
Akpabio emphasized transparency and accountability as core goals, though he hinted at potential revisions to the committee’s composition after further consultations. “This mandate is critical to safeguarding the rule of law,” he stated, reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to addressing governance challenges in Rivers State.
The move follows heightened scrutiny of the Sole Administrator’s role, with the Senate positioning itself as a proactive force in stabilizing the state’s political landscape. The committee’s immediate activation underscores legislative urgency, aligning with constitutional responsibilities to curb executive overreach and foster public trust.
