The 133 Cardinal electors, gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, have successfully chosen the new pope. White smoke has risen — the traditional signal that a decision has been made.

The world now awaits the appearance of the newly elected pontiff at the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

In keeping with centuries-old tradition, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, the senior cardinal deacon, will soon step forward to proclaim the historic words: “Habemus Papam” — “We have a pope.”
